So, you’ve got a flaky scalp. It’s cool. It’s okay. Loads of people do.
You’re armed with your trusted Head & Shoulders (or whatever alternative anti-dandruff shampoo you use), you’re safe in the knowledge that this will give you the flake-free scalp you crave, and everything’s fine.
Except for some reason, you’re still getting dandruff. Your shampoo isn’t working. Why?
It might all be down to your conditioner.
As Francesca Fusco told Women’s Health, using a regular conditioner after washing your hair will completely counteract the flake-preventing properties of your anti-dandruff shampoo.
We know. It’s shocking. We always just assumed that our shampoo did the main job, and that once it was done, it was done.
Nope. Once you apply a general, non-dandruff-specific conditioner, you’re getting rid of all the benefits of your shampoo. We’re sorry.
Fusco says: ‘Unilever has done studies on this, and they found that when people use dandruff shampoo, specifically ones with zinc pyrithione, and they use a beauty conditioner afterwards they can rinse away up to 50 percent of the flake-fighting effects of the medicated shampoo.’
She recommends that you follow up your anti-dandruff shampoo with a specialised anti-dandruff conditioner.
And don’t stress – that doesn’t mean you have to give up all your conditioner benefits. Most anti-dandruff brands are finally branching out and offering multiple conditioner options for dry, thin, and flat hair.
Now go forth, wash, and enjoy your flake-free new self.
